35mm – a full-frame classic

The new Nokton’s universal focal length of 35mm is the golden mean between telephoto and wide-viewing lenses. A slightly larger angle than the standard 50 mm will find use in filming and street, reportage or product photography. The 35mm is a classic of the genre. A focal length that will allow you to capture both stunning portraits and breathtaking landscapes.

Nokton means “night”

The Voigtlander 35 mm f/1.2 lens carries the title Nokton. It belongs to the line of super-bright lenses that make it possible to work even with a minimum amount of ambient light. The aperture ring allows to change its value in 1/2 EV increments between f/1.2 and f/22. Such a wide range gives a huge control over what is important in a given frame and what is just the background of the picture. Depth of field can be as thin as a sheet of paper or extend to almost the entire frame. With a wide-open aperture, the image is sharp in the center of the frame and plastic on the sides. A paper-like depth of field lets the subject of the picture stand out from its surroundings, focusing all the viewer’s attention on it. When the aperture is closed, sharpness appears across the entire width of the frame, but the out-of-focus areas still retain their characteristic dreamy look. Closing the aperture, which is made up of 12 straight blades, also produces beautiful starry reflections in night shots.

Uncompromised quality

The aperture of the new version of the Nokton 35 mm f/1.2 differs from its predecessor. It is significantly shorter and lighter than it. Like all Voigtlander lenses, it was made entirely of metal, with incredible precision and care. Thanks to that the construction will enjoy smooth operation for many years of use. The focus ring moves smoothly, but with the resistance due to precise adjustment.

It’s the inside that counts

The optical design hidden inside the metal barrel has also undergone quite a revolution. Designers from the Japanese Cosina resigned from the lens with an ultra-low dispersion coefficient, replacing it with two double-sided aspherical lenses. The whole system has been shortened and simplified. Instead of 10 elements as in the predecessors, the third version consists of 9 lenses arranged in 7 groups. This procedure allowed to reduce the structure while maintaining high optical performance.
